After being adopted into a loving home as a newborn, Lauren Kavanaugh was sent back to her birth mother and new step father, Barbara and Kenneth Atkinson. Despite fighting to get Lauren, the Atkinsons tortured and abused the young girl for 6 1/2 years, keeping her locked away in a closet for most of her life. When she was rescued, 8 year old Lauren was only 25lbs. Despite her traumatic childhood, though, Lauren went on to graduate high school and begin taking college classes.
